From JBMS Teacher Jerome Staniszewski

I received a grant from TEF to assist in the costs of attending the National Council for Geographic Education’s (NCGE) annual conference. The conference was fantastic and gave me a great many resources, lesson plans, and ideas to use with my 7th grade geography students at JBMS.

Not only did I gain a wealth of knowledge at the many sessions I attended during the four-day conference, I also made contacts with other educators from around the world and in turn, provided additional opportunities for my students. One such opportunity that came about was having a visit from the National Geographic Giant Traveling Map. Not only did my students learn about Africa in a unique way that day, but our school was featured in local newspapers and on the evening news that night!

During one of the sessions I attended at the conference, I was fortunate enough to win a set of geography books, valued at over $800.

Also as a result of people I met while at the conference, I have now been asked to sit on the board of the Pennsylvania Alliance for Geographic Education, which will undoubtedly lead to more opportunities for my students in the classroom.

With the support from TEF, my students (and future students) will benefit for many years to come.
